The Importance of Community for Well Being

Saturday, May 4, 2019 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

I just watched a documentary regarding stress and its impact on our well being. The executive producer, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, is a neurosurgeon and medical contributor for CNN. According to the documentary, empirical evidence points to the importance of social contact and community to well being. It emphasized how social isolation is an unfortunate variable in ill health, addiction, premature death and suicide. While this is not new information to me, I was struck by the uptodate data and got to thinking about the potential upside of polyamory — not only as a relationship structure, but also of the poly community as a tangible benefit. In the support group most often we discuss our poly life struggles and challenges, after all it is a support group. Perhaps in May, in addition to discussing our difficulties, we can also reflect on how polyamory enriches us and our connections to others, our sense of belonging, and well-being.

Fee: Recognizing our time and the cost of use of the space, a fee of $10 per person is requested. We know that this may be difficult for some. We encourage each of you to contribute what feels fair. Please do not let money be an obstacle to your participation. Feel free to speak with us if you have questions or concerns.

Please RSVP at the Chicago Polyamory Meetup site. We look forward to sharing ourselves, our issues, concerns, joys, successes etc. together in a meaningful way. Hope that you will join us.
