What’s the “I” in Identity?

I’ve been thinking quite a bit about identity. A few years ago I was given one of those DNA tests, Ancestry, to find out who I am related to and where I come from. Was there a missing part of my identity that would tell me more about who I am? I spit in the container and sent it away, only to find out that I am an Eastern European Jew. Well, I knew that. Recently I discovered that I had a great, great, grand father who was from Ukraine, other grandfolk from Latvia, Germany, Austria. The picture of identities was filling out, adding to the potpourri of my current identities.

But I’ve been wondering if those identities essentially make me who I am, really.

Today I heard Kateryna Yushchenko, former First Lady of Ukraine say”…we are fighting for our identity…”. There are those in the polyam community who say being polyam is an identity, not simply a life style or choice. What is important for you about organizing yourself around identities, a polyamorous identity, if it is?

Let’s discuss.
